Since 2014, she has been part of the General Directorate for Competition Advocacy at the Mexico Competition Authority (COFECE), first as Director of Collaboration with the Public and Academic Sectors, later as Deputy General Director of Promotion of Competition, and since 2018 - as General Director.  She teaches Industrial Organization and Economic Regulation at the Universidad Iberoamericana, where she has also taught the subjects of Institutional Economics and Regulation, and Macroeconomics. She was a researcher at the Research Centre for Development (CIDAC, by its acronym in Spanish) where she also served as Coordinator for the Mexican Network of Competition and Regulation. She has also worked as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Network on Government Procurement (INGP) and the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. María José holds a degree in Economics and a Masters in Economic Policy and Public Policy.
